  1. I just have to say, 3rd Bass is -completely- underrated, and it’s shame all they’re (halfway) known for is “Pop Goes the Weasel”. *stab*

    • Couldn’t agree more. The Cactus Album popped up on Amazon a few months ago for a few bucks, and I grabbed it immediately. At least Serch is still working in the industry.

  2. It’s a sign o’ times, it’s a sign o’ the times, it’s a sign…o’ the times.

  3. What a brilliant post!

I love hearing how music captures the memory of a time and place – and this does it perfectly. I was still at primary school in 1987 but I was already an avid music fan and I actually bought 3 of these 4 CDs! Admittedly I picked up The Cure & Prince quite a few years later when I was in my teens.

The T’Pau album is great. I loved it then and I still love it now. Prince and I have a complicated relationship but that album is one of his better late 80s offerings. As for The Cure, “Just Like Heaven” is one of my all time favourite songs. I even like Katie Melua’s version!

I have to say Keith Sweat totally passed me by but I love his jumper on the cover. He should hook up with La Toya for a trashtastic comeback duet.

PS. I want all the raunchy details that were omitted from this post!

    • Thanks for the compliment, Mike! These entries just come pouring out of me, so it never really feels like a lot of effort. I have actually never heard the Katie Melua version, but I will go find it right now. As for the Keith/LaToya duet, I can’t see it happening. I mean, he still has a career.

      I kid, I KID!

Details? Not up on this forum! I take enough abuse for things I DIDN’T do!

  4. Wow, so many good songs here. I was obsessed with “Heart and Soul” but not so much with the entire cassette. I thought I was so cool because I knew the words to the background verse sung underneath the main vocals. “Just Like Heaven” is a gem to this day. Disintegration was a fantasticly dark (or maybe that’s how my 17 year old mind processed it) yet extremely listenable record. “Love Song” and “Lullaby” were instant faves.

    • Go back and find “China In Your Hands”. Still a classic! And I think I’m inspired now to do that Disintegration post. Don’t forget “Fascination Street” and “Pictures of You”. “Pictures” is EPIC.

  6. Did I know we are the same age? I guess I did!

Agreed on Sign O The Times. I remember the first time I heard that song (senior yr hs) and I thought WTF? And then it hit me. I feel like that is one of the most unconventional pop hits in history. EPIC.

    • Coming off of “Kiss” and the rest of Under a Cherry Moon, Sign was a revelation. Glad I’m not the only one who feels that way.

  7. The fall of 1987 was a special musical time for me too, as that was when I first started listening to popular music (I was all about Madonna, Debbie Gibson, and Whitney Houston at the time. Oh how little things change.)
