Random Notes – 03-20-10

It’s the first day of spring here in Denver, which means it’s a beautiful day outside, as long as you love sunny, cold days with a lot of snow on the ground. The high on Monday will be in the 60s…welcome to the Colorado rollercoaster!

– It’s been interesting to watch the parallel climbs of American Idol Season 8 winner Kris Allen and the Script up the Pop airplay chart over the past two months. For those not familiar, Kris’s “Live Like We’re Dying” is a Script original that was the b-side to their debut single “We Cry”. I really like the Script’s debut, and “Breakeven” has always been my favorite track on their debut, but I am not a fan of their version of “Live”. Seems like a win-win situation for everyone…Kris gets a top 20 hit out of the box, and the Script get a natural boost after their US debut “Man Who Can’t Be Moved” didn’t quite set the charts on fire. Here’s the Script version of “Live”:

– Mr Hudson will score his first US top 40 hit next week, but only as a featured artist on Jay-Z’s “Young Forever”. The single comes in at #41 this week on the Billboard Hot 100, up a strong 18 spots from last week. Island/Def Jam still has Hudson featured on the front page of their website, so maybe he’s still a priority.

– I was watching Chelsea Lately this evening, and a makeup commercial used Paloma Faith’s “Stone Cold Sober”. Is an American invasion in the cards for Paloma? With fellow Brits Jay Sean, La Roux and Taio Cruz making strong runs at the American pop chart, maybe this is the time to have a go at it. By the way, do you think La Roux’s success on Cherrytree here in the US has anything to do with labelmate Lady GaGa? Just wondering…

And while we’re also speaking of Chelsea, I saw her live last weekend. Let’s just say that I would have been better off using that money for one of my upcoming shows in April. With Miike Snow and Sia on the slate, it should be a good music month.

I’m not sure what I am more shocked at…that Paloma got a fourth single released in the form of “Upside Down”, that said single is not “Stargazer”, or that she would willingly appear in a video for this single where there is next to no budget whatsoever. I have loved the visual aspects of her first few videos, but this one just falls flat. However, any Paloma Faith single is a good thing, so let’s be glad that the record label is still behind her.

You think I’m kidding, right? Let me share some of the goodness that the BBC hooked me up with this afternoon. By the way, this was all in a row. I thought my head might explode from happy musical vibes.

– Paloma Faith/Stone Cold Sober – New single from a new artist. That’s why you listen to foreign radio stations, isn’t it? The single come out 15 June on Sony UK, who describe Paloma as:

The force of nature that answers to the name Paloma Faith is one that has been known in underground arts circles in London for some time. As an ex-magician’s assistant, trained contemporary dancer, St Martin’s college alumni with an MA in theatre direction, performer in burlesque shows and actress Paloma has been mixing media throughout her short adult life. A few years ago she introduced music, her primary love, into the equation, at first mimicking the blues and soul singers she so admired, but eventually finding her own voice.

They can describe her any way they want to, but that doesn’t change the fact that we’ve got another talented lady making 2009 a year to remember. While you wait for the single release, check out the excellent video down below:

-The Gossip/Heavy Cross – The Gossip return with the first single from their sophomore release Music For Men, hoping to avoid the Scissor Sisters’ fate of diminishing returns. “Heavy Cross” is already off to a good start, coming in at #47 on downloads alone in the UK, and ahead of it’s physical release on 22 June. Folks wanting to buy it in the US will have to wait until the 23rd, when the song will be available digitally.

– Linkin Park/New Divide – This is not my usual type of recommendation, but I have really been liking this new track from the soundtrack of Transformers 2. The clip below is a Making the Video piece that really looks pretty cool, but with Joseph Hahn behind the lens, you’re gonna get something visually out there.

– Mr Hudson/Supernova – The buzz is beginning, folks. Picked as Edith’s Record of the Week, the track is starting to get some traction, and now we’ve even got a remix from none other than Calvin Harris, which you can grab here. I can’t find a single release listed as of yet, but Straight No Chaser hits shelves in the UK on 03 August. The video hasn’t dropped for this one, either, but here’s the Calvin Harris mix.
