What’s Shayne Ward Doing?

In a time of crisis, isn’t it comforting to know that there are still things out there to live for? As an example: shaynerodesjpgShayne Ward, who we last saw in a re-enactment of the Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” video, is hard at work on his third disc, with a summer target for release. While I recognize that I’m just a small blog on the huge superhighway of the Internet, could it be possible that Shayne read that last entry, and felt the need to make changes in his life (and diet)?

I’m training hard and believe me it’s hard work when you’ve got an instructor, ha he’s putting me through my paces, but it’ll all be worth it trust me.

Shayne, Shayne, Shayne. Don’t go changin’, to try and please us. You never let us down before. We blame all of the missteps in promoting “Breathless” on Simon Cowell and the record label. How else do you explain single-worthy songs like “Tangled Up” and “You Make Me Wish” never seeing the light of day, let alone the magic of half-naked scenarios for Shayne to make videos of. Interesting note in the January blog entry, though…there’s talk of a duet. Hmmm…wonder who his management team might think it’s a good idea for Shayne to duet with. Possibly another X-Factor winner who has already achieved success in the elusive American market? Only time will tell.

colby_odonis_grammysSpeaking of duet partners riding coattails, can we talk about Colby O’Donis (or Adonis, as D’luv refers to him) for a moment? Talk about one of the luckiest guys on the face of the planet. Just 20 years old, and he already has 3 top 20 hits, including co-star billing with Akon and Lady GaGa, and a Grammy Nomination for “Just Dance” to boot. He’s only had one hit on his own (“What You Got”, which hit #14 on the Billboard Hot 100), but his handlers are hoping that a remix of “Let You Go” will fly at radio to keep the track record intact (check it out here). It sounds a LOT like “Let Me Love You” by Mario, but I’m not sure that this has hit written all over it, even though I like it. What do you all think?

Enough

Um, Idol spoilers. Just saying.

The title refers to what I was thinking as I watched the end of the “wild” card episode of American Idol last night, which was only wild because the folks involved with the show watched a completely different show than I did. According to the show I was watching, eight contestants were brought back to sing for their Idol careers, and would be judged accordingly. The producers, however, saw an episode where the performances were merely a formality, and no matter what happened, the remaining three four contestants were already determined.

I told someone this morning that I feel like I’m in mourning right now, and that sounds all melodramatic, but I can’t deny it. I’ve invested seven years into this guilty pleasure, and there’s a sense of betrayal that the powers that be don’t trust the American public to make the right decision. Sad thing is, I was actually in favor of the revamp, thinking that the judges would bring an objective eye to a few of the Top 12 13 contestants, but after seeing horrible performances by folks that made it through, and stellar performances not being rewarded, that’s an impossibility now.

I’m quickly moving away from TV as a whole, which many would argue isn’t a bad thing, but the sad part of this shift is that I lose one more watercooler topic that folks at work and friends can bond over. Granted, we can sit here online and cackle amongst ourselves about the latest U2 faux pas, but it sure doesn’t hurt to have some connection to the outside world apart from the news, which really doesn’t do much to uplift. I probably will watch Idol from time to time if I’m home and it’s on, but other than that, I will leave the hand-wringing and visionary predictions to others. Just stick a fork in me…I’m done.

I Spoke Too Soon

Leave it to Billboard to be the bearer of MORE bad news…

virgin-denverThe planned closures of the Virgin Megastores in Times Square and Union Square in New York City and the Market Street store in San Francisco are the beginning of the final wind-down of the Virgin Entertainment Group North America. Over the next few months, the company also plans to shutter its other three stores in Orlando, Fla., Denver and Los Angeles, with the company expected to be liquidated sometime this summer.

I’m feeling like Cousin Oliver at the moment, but it was just a matter of time. Turns out that there was a little more effort to save the chain than folks might be giving them credit for…

But the company was also working on improving its concept for a smaller space. With CD sales sliding, “I tried my hardest to come up with a new model, and we were making a lot of headway with it before the holidays,” says (CEO Simon) Wright. But, the “economy is so bad; it’s all about batten down the hatches.”

I think I’m going to be spending a LOT of time in that store once the discounts get to 40% or so. This also creates another rough situation for Denver, as that’s a huge space to fill down on the 16th Street Mall. I wonder if Virgin has a tenant lined up for this space like they did in Times Square? Only time will tell…

Vince Clark Strikes Again!

vince-clarke1Okay, someone woke Vince up and decided that he needed to be a bit more visible in the industry. Besides the Erasure hits package and last year’s Yaz(oo) tour, Vince recently took on remixing duties for the Saturdays’ vastly improved remix of “Issues”, and now another remix has surfaced for Franz Ferdinand’s “No You Girls”, which I talked about last week. The single drops officially on April 6th in the UK, but I don’t have US release info. I’ve heard the single, and it’s pretty cool how it takes the FF vocals, and makes them sound just like they would have fit into the mid-80s.

Not Enough Virgins

I got the “breaking news” email from Billboard yesterday that two more Virgin Records locations are slated to close, and I opened it with a little trepidation, because I didn’t want to see Denver listed.

virgin-denverLast Saturday, I got to stop in and browse a little bit, which hasn’t happened much recently, and it seemed like every catalog item was on sale. I didn’t buy much (Alison Moyet’s “Singles” for $5), but in a weird way, it was comforting to wander around the store, listen to Snow Patrol on the overhead, and check out all of the listening stations with music that most people will never care about. I have always coveted the time I’ve spent in record stores, even after I escaped the retail rat race, and to see that opportunity go away is not a pleasant thought to me. The whole “world of music at your fingertips digitally” is great when I know what I’m looking for, but for me, there will always be a longing for a more tangible music experience.

As I checked out, I couldn’t help myself, and I asked the woman “you all aren’t going anywhere any time soon, are you?” Her response was a bit awkward, as if I’d asked a question she hadn’t heard before. “We never find out about these things until it’s too late.”
Yeah…I know the feeling. The store was actually pretty busy, as it is located in a great area for tourists to shop, and I wonder if that’s the only reason the store has survived as long as it has.

I’ve said it once, and I will say it again. If you will miss this type of experience, please make sure that you support your musically-oriented brick-and-mortar record shops. Through an acquaintance, I’ve heard that one of the granddaddies of the Denver music scene will probably be going out of business soon as well, and it’s probably inevitable. The only way a music store will remain viable is if they become destinations for more than just CDs. They’ve tried…oh, trust me, they have. Video games, DVDs, t-shirts, electronics, incense, books…you walk into some music stores, and sometimes it’s hard to locate the music. However, with sales of CDs slipping double-digits every year, we’re going to see music sales go back to just being a department in a bigger store, and even that is slipping away as well.

Here’s a prediction you can count on: by the end of 2011, a well-known record company will announce that they are going to stop producing physical CDs. I don’t think you will see wholesale defections from the format for a few more years, but some labels that cater to demographics with high digital-sales figures would be more inclined to do this (someone like Tommy Boy or Astralwerks comes to mind). It’s a vision I would rather not see come true, but it’s time has come.

Norman Gentle Is a GOD

I am about to make a prediction that will cause people all over the country to gouge their eardrums and send me hate mail, but it has to be said.

norman-gentle-pianoBased on the horrible quality of last night’s contestants, Nick Mitchell, aka Norman Gentle, will get through to the Final 12 tonight. And yes, I voted for him. He was far and away the best part of last night’s show. Stay tuned…

[By the way…this was not really meant to be taken seriously. I could have played the sarcasm a bit more effectively.

Video Notables – Gary Go

Didn’t we just get a video post a few days ago? Yeah…the rollercoaster that is my life continues to roll on, whether or not I’m strapped in and ready to go. I may be off the radar for another day or so, but in the meantime, courtesy of Bill Lamb of About.com, here’s one of my favorite videos of the year so far. Granted, it’s the song that grabs your attention, but I really like the look and feel of the video as well. [Apologies in advance: the only video available for embedding is not that great quality. For better quality, check it out here.]

I’ve got to say that it doesn’t surprise me at all that Gary Barlow and his mates decided on this Gary as an opening act for their upcoming “The Circus” tour. Besides probably getting him dirt cheap, Gary B’s probably kicking himself that he didn’t write “Wonderful” himself, because this is a classic Barlow composition. I can’t find any mention of a U.S. release, but you can find his song “Honest” on the 2007 soundtrack for the movie “Song of Songs”.

Video Notables – Pet Shop Boys

“Don’t have to be!” I have been loving “Love Etc”, and now the Boys have unleashed their animated accompaniment to the track. Part Super Mario Brothers, part kaleidoscope, all fabulous. Some of you who checked out their performance from the Brits will probably recognize some of the graphics from the on-stage backdrop, but the video just takes the song to the next level. March 24th is when “Yes” comes out in the US, and it can’t get here soon enough. What’s the verdict, folks?

– Despite loving the Pet Shop Boys performance/tribute at the Brit Awards this week, my choice for favorite performance hands down goes to the Ting Tings and Estelle for their mash-up of “Shut Up and Let Me Go”, “American Boy”, and “That’s Not My Name”.

As a consolation, though, check out this grainy but still watchable version of PSB’s “Go West” from 15 years ago.

– In the “there might be justice yet” department, it looks like Apple might be helping PMN favorites Franz Ferdinand here in the US with a new iPhone commercial that utilizes “No You Girls”. Here’s a cool performance video of the track. If Feist, Yael Naim and the Ting Tings are the models, Franz Ferdinand should have a Top 40 hit in a couple of weeks.

– Inquiring minds apparently wanted to know more about the super secret (squirrel) mission last weekend. Well, I ended up back in San Francisco for another fun-filled weekend, including a midnight sing-along of Grease, complete with a drag re-enactment of “Summer Nights”. While both of our attempts to get cheap seats for Wicked failed miserably, I had a great time, and am looking forward to my next trip. Wonder when that’ll be…

Idols In Trouble

You can take that title multiple ways, but they all fit. The show’s in trouble, the contestants are in trouble, the whole thing’s a cluster. Where do I start? (Maybe by stating that there are spoilers here. Don’t read if you don’t want results.)

ai8_36grp1_tatianadeltoro– How about America’s Next Top Drama Queen, Tatiana! If VH1 can hand out the title of Best Week Ever, then maybe we should award the Worst Week Ever to Ms. Del Toro. Despite the fact that she had moments of brilliance on Tuesday night (mixed in with moments of mediocrity), the judges who supposedly put her through to this round were completely SHOCKED that she could sing. She’s delusional enough to work around that, though. Tonight, on the other hand, was just downright cruel. American Idol truly slipped to a new low, as the producers held Tatiana out for the final judgment against Danny Gokey, who most have already pegged to make it to the top 2. The news had to be broken to her at some point, but the true cruelty was in following her emotional breakdown all through Danny’s repeat performance of “Hero”. It was just downright evil. Speaking of evil…

– Danny Gokey lost a LOT of points tonight. Anyone notice how smug and impatient he was while waiting for his coronation? He couldn’t have shown more contempt for Ryan if he had held a gun to Seacrest’s head and demanded to know the winner. Sorry, Danny, but there’s no editing of packages at this point of the game. The American public gets to see you, warts and all. On top of that, his closing performance of “Hero” was (to quote Simon from a few weeks ago) indulgent. Something changed between Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and I definitely don’t like it.

Michael Sarver– America gets the whole picture. While there was talk that Anoop Desai was destined for Top 12 greatness, a buzz was also building for Michael (formerly Jeremy) Sarver. The fact that the vote was so close between the two of them shows that folks took into account the full history of their performances, because if the viewers hadn’t taken that into account, Ricky Braddy should have easily had Michael’s spot in the top 3. Chances are good that both Desai and Braddy will be back for the Wildcard round.

anna-marie-boskovich-01-2009-01-27– You only get one shot. Jackie Tohn, Anne Marie Boskovich, and Brian Keith…it’s been nice knowing you. Anne Marie might make it back to the Wildcard round, but all three took major falls from contenders to also-rans based on one performance. And let’s not even get into the rest of the ladies. The guys really do have the upper hand this year, with the exception of Alexis Grace, who was miles away from her female counterparts.
